COUNTRY OVERVIEW
Millions of Syrian refugees are currently living in Turkey, mostly in refugee camps and in host communities. More than half of the Syrian refugees in Turkey are children and adolescents, with most of them not taking part in regular school education. The high numbers of refugees pose major challenges for public institutions, especially in education, health and social care.
In order to strengthen social cohesion between Syrian refugees and the Turkish host communities in the region of Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa, the DOSB in collaboration with the GIZ conduct sport-related workshops in cities at the Turkish-Syrian border. The workshops are organized and funded within the framework of the project "Sport for Development in the Educational Program for Syrian Refugees and Host Communities" on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The focus is on imparting knowledge about sports and movement as an integrative element and instrument of intercultural encounter as well as the connection between sport and education, health and inclusion in the refugee context. Within the workshops, Turkish and Syrian multipliers are trained to initiate and establish sport activities in clubs, schools and community centres for intercultural exchange, promotion of respect and appreciation of the different cultures. By this, improved access to meaningful activities and social cohesion is offered to Syrian and Turkish children, adolescents and young adults.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is an essential part of any S4D programme and all activities on the ground. The M&E tools below have been developed in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS). They were applied in different working contexts in Turkey. If you are interested in M&E, this S4D Resource Toolkit offers you additional comprehensive information about M&E in the field of S4D and provides further hands-on M&E tools for your own practice.
