Young Ivorian people face major challenges on the labor market: more than a third of the population aged 15 to 29 are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and 92% of the young working population are in informal employment, which is particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For young people to secure a job and progress at work in this challenging environment, they need to be equipped with skills, knowledge and competences that increase their employability prospects. In the context of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), employability serves as a bridge between vocational education and employment.

In Côte d’Ivoire, the German Development cooperation’s (GIZ) Regional Project “Sport for Development in Africa” (S4DA) implements its activities in the area of TVET whereby sport is used as a tool to strengthen young people’s personal, social, methodological, and professional skills and therefore improve their employability prospects. Through the embedment of the Sport for Development approach within the training curricula of partner TVET institutions, life skills that are central to foster employability, such as communication and entrepreneurship, are promoted and vocational training is made more dynamic and attractive. TVET teachers are being trained as S4D multipliers providing them with an innovative and hands-on teaching methodology to strengthen personal, social, methodological, and professional skills of their learners.

Furthermore, four S4D manuals on the promotion of key competences relevant to the labor market have been developed and are being used by the trained multipliers in the implementation of S4D activities with learners. Finally, grassroot sports grounds are being constructed to offer safe spaces for sport and Sport for Development activities.
