COUNTRY OVERVIEW
In Afghanistan, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) in cooperation with the Afghan Education Ministry works on promoting school sport for girls. The long-term aim is to provide more and better physical education at girls’ schools.
Sport is one of the most popular leisure activities in Afghanistan. Despite this, there are very few opportunities for people to get involved through sports associations. Especially girls and young women need safe spaces to take part in exercise and sports. Schools are one of the few places where this is possible. However, they lack teaching plans, sports equipment, infrastructure and well-trained physical education teachers, especially female teachers.
GIZ and their partners therefore decided to develop a curriculum for physical education (PE), which will become part of the overall basic education curriculum for primary school teachers. The programme also piloted teacher training activities which informed participants how to enhance personal and social competences of girls and young women. Participants have learned how to use sport as a means of personal development and how to adapt sports activities to the local context and make optimal use of local resources.
We invite you to have a look at the following teaching and learning material, which was created by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and our partner organizations in Afghanistan. You will find a more detailed description about the materials in our collection S4D Tools for your Practice/Teaching and Learning Materials.
