COUNTRY OVERVIEW

The Youth Development through Football (YDF) project started in 2007 as a legacy of the 2006 Football World Cup in Germany and ended in December 2013. It was implemented by the GIZ in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA). The project formed an important part of the German-South African FIFA World Cup 2010 co-operation. It was funded by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and, until end of 2012, co-funded by the European Union.

The project used the popularity of football and the social and educational potential to promote youth development. The project´s major objective is to establish and support youth development initiatives in South Africa. Football training is combined with non-formal education measures and development activities. The target group primarily consists of disadvantaged young people in the age group of 12 to 25 years as well as NGOs and government institutions on national and provincial level in South Africa. The project focuses on four main areas: Capacity Development, Sport for Development Networks, Promotion and Events, Tools for Youth Development through Sport.

Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) is an essential part of any S4D programme and all activities on the ground. The M&E tools below have been developed in cooperation with the German Sport University Cologne (DSHS). They were applied in different working contexts in South Africa. If you are interested in M&E, this S4D Resource Toolkit offers you additional comprehensive information about M&E in the field of S4D and provides further hands-on M&E tools for your own practice.
