From being shy to being unstoppable: How sport transformed Hira into a leader of change in Pakistan

In a country where opportunities for women are often overshadowed by societal constraints and gender inequality, Hira’s story is a powerful one. Coming from a vulnerable and conservative community in Pakistan, a nation ranked 142 out of 146 in the Global Gender Gap Report 2023, Hira dared to dream differently – and succeeded.

Her journey began in August 2023 when she joined the GIZ Sport for Development (S4D) Youth Ambassadors Programme, a platform designed to empower youth through the transformative power of sports. At first, Hira was reserved and uncertain, struggling to find her voice. But through capacity-building workshops that focused on community mobilization, gender equality, and digital literacy, she found not only her voice but also her purpose.

The programme was more than just training; it became a springboard for Hira to imagine and pursue a brighter future. Engaging with a global network of coaches and mentors, she discovered how sports can be a powerful tool for development. "Before joining the programme, I was shy and hesitant to speak, even within my own family." Hira recalls. "Now, I confidently advocate for women's rights and challenge societal taboos through the Sport for Development approach."

Her efforts didn’t stop at personal growth. Armed with her newfound confidence and skills, Hira began mobilizing her community, inspiring other young women to break free from the restrictions imposed on them. She has since represented her university at the state leveltwice, showcasing her leadership on and off the field.

Through her work, Hira has shown that even in the most challenging circumstances, change is possible. Her story is not just about one woman’s success—it’s a call to action for communities and organizations to recognize the unseen potential of young women everywhere.

Hira’s message is clear: No dream is too big, and no barrier is unbreakable when you have the courage to lead and the support to thrive.
