Interview with Tarek Rekik, head of the cultural and sports activities department at the Tunisian Vocational Training Agency
Why is it so important to improve the employability of young people in Tunisia and how can S4D help to enhance it?
"S4D can play a key role in improving the employability of young people in vocational training centers in Tunisia for several reasons: First, Sport for Development enables young people to acquire skills sought by employers, such as teamwork, discipline, time management, communication, stress management and problem-solving. These non-technical skills, often referred to as 'soft skills', are just as important as technical skills in the world of work. Secondly, S4D initiatives provide opportunities to network with professionals and mentors, facilitating access to the labour market through internships or partnerships. Finally, it targets young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, offering them a space to develop their personal and professional potential".
What does your work with the S4D project in Tunisia entail?
"The youth workers organise and lead inclusive sports activities. These activities aim to reinforce key values such as respect and teamwork, while meeting the needs of the participants. The sports sessions are designed to develop skills such as communication, resilience and cooperation, which are crucial for their future careers. The youth workers also act as coaches and mentors for the participants. Under their guidance, the young people can think about their future careers and identify their strengths in order to take advantage of job opportunities. Finally, group activities like these strengthen social networks and promote the inclusion of disadvantaged or marginalised young people. In our work, it is important to continuously monitor the young people's progress and adapt our activities to their needs".
What is the added value of the S4D approach in your work?
"S4D promotes social integration, networking between young people and professionals and the development of transversal professional skills, contributing to the employability of young people and their active role in society".
Can you share any success stories or figures?
"In 2024, we reached more than 700 young people who benefited from S4D activities through various clubs and events. Twelve of them became Youth Ambassadors for Sport for Development and started designing their own projects. In addition, 40 young people, 8 youth workers and 4 chaperones participated in an inter-center S4D tournament. Finally, we trained 20 youth workers in the S4D approach and another 20 youth workers participated in an S4D post-training/refresher workshop.
