Empowering Communities Through Inclusive and Gender-Sensitive Sports Infrastructure
By Hedris Fri Achiri
Sports have the power to bring people together, but to truly create lasting impact, the spaces where they take place must be accessible, safe, and inclusive. Recognizing this, the GIZ Regional Sport for Development Project in Africa partnered with the OlympAfrica Foundation (OAF) to host a transformative two-day workshop in Gandiaye, Kaolack, Senegal, from March 14–15, 2025. The goal? To ensure that sports infrastructure serves as a tool for social inclusion, gender equality, and long-term community empowerment.
This workshop was not just about building sports facilities—it was about building opportunities. Participants explored strategies to create infrastructure that welcomes everyone, from young girls and boys to individuals with disabilities. Safeguarding principles were at the heart of discussions, reinforcing the importance of safe and supportive environments, especially for children and women in sports.
A well-built facility is only as impactful as its management. That’s why the workshop placed a strong emphasis on financial sustainability and long-term viability. Participants engaged in interactive sessions to develop strategies for generating revenue and maintaining their sports centers, including:
✔ Hosting community events and tournaments
✔ Establishing membership programs for structured access
✔ Partnering with local businesses for sponsorships
✔ Offering training programs and sports academies
The workshop left a profound impact on its participants. Abdoulaye Diasse, Director of the Center, reflected on the experience:"Our vision at the center is to promote gender equality and social inclusion through sports. This workshop provided us with practical tools to ensure that our infrastructure is managed inclusively and sustainably. We now feel better equipped to implement these principles in our daily operations." The workshop may have ended, but the momentum is just beginning. By equipping local stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to manage their facilities inclusively and sustainably, GIZ and OAF are ensuring that these spaces continue to serve as true community hubs.
Because sports infrastructure shouldn’t just exist: it should thrive, inspire, and empower.
